Former Ichagaki MCA Dr Charles Mwangi has called on the people of Mt Kenya to embrace multiparty politics, urging residents to reject the idea that the region must be politically tied to a single party or political formation.
Speaking during the burial of his brother, which was attended by a host of political leaders and other dignitaries, Dr Mwangi said Mt Kenya should remain open to different political parties and allow residents to make independent political choices.
Dr Mwangi argued that political diversity was essential in strengthening democracy and giving the people greater bargaining power ahead of the 2027 General Election.
““Let us embrace multiparty politics in Mt Kenya. Our people should be free to belong to different political parties and make their own political choices,” Dr Mwangi said.”
His remarks come at a time when political activity in Mt Kenya is intensifying, with different parties and political formations seeking to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former MCA's call could resonate with growing efforts by smaller political parties and emerging political movements to challenge the dominance of major parties in the region.
For years, Mt Kenya politics has largely revolved around a few dominant political formations, with leaders frequently seeking to rally the region behind a common political vehicle.
Dr Mwangi's position, however, suggests that the region could benefit from greater political competition rather than political uniformity .
He argued that allowing different parties to compete for the support of Mt Kenya residents would give voters the freedom to assess leaders and policies before deciding where to place their support.
